George Banks and Lisa O'Brien were destined to be together from birth. Their fathers fought side by side in World War Two and bought homes next to one another after the war. The two never bothered with anyone other than the other, and when George shipped off to Vietnam just like his father before him, he promised Lisa a ring when he returned. One of the luckiest sons of bitches in the war, George made it back not just a decorated solider, but without much of a scratch to him. His friends jokingly referred to him as a 'super solider.'
Life as the son of a super solider, let alone the fifth and youngest son of one, was not an easy position to be in for young Jacob. He jokes now about how he doesn't know which was harder to swallow, the military family or the irish catholic upbringing. The agreement between Lisa and George was that the kids would never be subjected to the nomadic lifestyle. Lisa and her family would keep home base right where it was. george might've been an absent father, but his shadow loomed over the household. one by one he watched his brothers take the same steps as the one before them, all finding their way into the army. jacob knew this was his fate as well, but his road diverged a little more than the others on the way there. tests and papers and grades weren't jacob's thing, but people certainly were. girls were. dares, and challenges, and stupid shit were. to jacob, high school was his only opportunity to be an individual and he ran with it.
Freedom was savored, but Jacob also didn't waver from his duty. Once he graduated, he signed up.
As resistant as he had been his whole life to signing up, he found the ranks to be a lot like home. He had a name to live up to, but a few years in he was able to shake it off when a fellow solider learned Jacob's middle name was Bogart. The nickname Bogie was easily won after a letter he'd been writing to a girl back home had been discovered and read out loud in the mess hall. Of course, given that Jacob had never struggled for female attention, the name wasn't exactly a complete mockery. To Bogie, it was a sign that people could separate him from his family, and it was just about all he'd ever needed.
A few years into the service and it was uncovered that while Bogie didn't test well on paper, he had an incredibly keen mind, and had an incredible grace under pressure. he was fearless and lucky and it wasn't long before he found himself in a bomb suit. The first time he successfully completed a mission, he felt like he finally forged his own identity. Outside of touring, Bogie found his life to be fairly simple and uncomplicated. He'd learned how to have fun on his down times and work past the heavy shit. he had a support system in his entire family full of people who knew what it was like to go between the real world (touring) and being back home. all of this changed the day the bomb denotated before bogie could get to it. a life was lost and a large piece of shrapnel severed his left arm.
The discharge from the life he'd only ever seen for himself left him more in the dark than the loss of a limb had. Everything he'd known, everything he'd trusted in, everything he'd given himself to was gone including his good friend. Depression was just the tip of the iceberg when he returned. Given his family's notoriety and his own performance within the army, he was elected for a protype bionic arm that allows him to control his arm with his thoughts. This was not as easy as it sounded on paper, and Bogie has spent the better part of 2016 and 2017 learning how to train his own thoughts to commuticate with the arm, sometimes to disasterous results.
Against his own code of ethics for himself, he began to drink heavily enough that at the beginning of 2017 he began to sit in the back of a few AA meetings from time to time. However, with the help of the VA, he was able to secure a job at an auto body shop and by fall was signed up for a few night classes to study engineering. He jokes that he wants to work on a degree that will allow himself to modify his own arm so he can get back on a motorcycle, but for now being able to fix them is something. The job, the schooling, the general exposure to people who weren't alcoholics or former soldiers has helped pull him out of the depths of his own mind and allowed him to reintroduce himself into society.

In 1945, in an attempt to capture HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola, Barnes was attacked and promptly plummeted off the side of a HYDRA train. He was then presumed to be deceased, though unbeknownst to his teammates Barnes had actually survived due to the experiments performed on him by Zola while he was briefly captured as a POW, albeit with the loss of his left arm. Brainwashed and armed with a new cybernetic limb, Barnes ultimately became an enhanced HYDRA operative known as the Winter Soldier. Over the next several decades, he would eliminate anyone who posed a threat to HYDRA, including his former ally, Howard Stark along with his wife Maria. Between missions, Barnes would be put into a cryogenic stasis to preserve his longevity. Over half a century later, when he was ordered by HYDRA leader Alexander Pierce to assassinate S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, the Winter Soldier was confronted by his old friend, Steve Rogers, triggering him to begin remembering his prior life.
In the aftermath of the Battle at the Triskelion, the Winter Soldier went on the run from HYDRA on a self-imposed mission to remember his past and end his violent history. However, during this time Barnes was accused of being the perpetrator behind the Bombing of the Vienna International Centre, which claimed the lives of many individuals including T'Chaka, the king of Wakanda, which led to T'Chaka's son T'Challa to pursue him to gain vengeance. Barnes was saved by Captain America, sparking the Avengers Civil War as he also became a target for Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and Iron Man. When Iron Man learned that the Winter Soldier had killed his family, Barnes was once again saved by Rogers as it was revealed that Helmut Zemo had organized the entire civil war between the Avengers as revenge for incidentally killing his family a year prior during the Battle of Sokovia. Barnes was then taken to Wakanda, where he chose to be cryogenically frozen until his mind could be cured of the mental programming implanted by HYDRA.
